VA PTA Legislation Program

What is PTA Legislation?
PTA is an advocacy organization. We exist in order to advance opportunities for our own and other people's children via opportunities in our schools. The Hanover County Council of PTAs operates under the umbrella of the Va Association of PTAs (VAPTA), which operates under the National PTA.  Each winter, VAPTA follows legislation that is being considered by the Virginia General Assembly in order to be our eyes, ears and voices as policies develop.

Every year, Virginia’s local PTA units approve a legislation program that represents the official position on a wide variety of issues affecting children and youth. The program consists of Legislative Action items and Policy Statements. The program is the basis for official testimony by the PTA at legislative hearings and before other agencies.

What are the Proposed Legislation items for the 2017 General Assembly?

LEGISLATIVE ACTION ITEM #1:
Virginia PTA seeks legislation that would allow local governments to adopt ordinances to
prohibit or regulate firearms retailers within designated Gun Free School zones.
POSITION STATEMENT #1:
Virginia PTA supports the establishment of guidelines for alternatives to short-term and
long-term suspensions.
POSITION STATEMENT #2:
Virginia PTA supports sensible juvenile justice reforms.

One last thing....
VAPTA has a legislative action day where our members visit the General Assembly to meet members and advocate for our positions.  This year's event will be January 29-30 and we hope to have strong representation from Hanover County. This might be a bit intimidating for some, but I assure you that there is good training to help you feel comfortable using your voice to advance our issues with our state leaders.  More info will be coming on this.
